Art in Wartime

Art has become a mirror of Ukraine’s resistance, strength and courage. Art in the wartime reflects our losses and deepest sorrow, our hope for the future of our nation and land, our anger against the occupants, our desire for freedom. Ukrainian art today is sharp, strong, intense and powerful. Artists put into their artworks their hearts, their blood, their souls, their fears and their hopes. However, it’s not always possible to deep dive into art creation and reflection processes, as the majority of Ukrainians are volunteering to support our Military Forces. Today,we are going to hear the live stories of Ukrainian artists, who decided to stay in Ukraine and continue working.

A scheduled meeting between A4P and Ukranian artists Olena Kayinska and Zoza Hrebenyukova-Kobenko had to be abruptly interrupted due to wailing sirens of an impending air raid. They rushed to the nearest bomb shelter and sent us this picture. This is life in Ukraine.

Olena and Zoza are currently working on an initiative called МИ ТУТ АРТ. According to the founders, “This is a project that aims to launch a large-scale all-Ukrainian action "We are Here Art", which unites all artists who continue to create during the war. This will show the power of unity, the breadth of self-expression and the creative freedom of the people of Ukraine.”

Stay tuned for more details.
