Awakening In Taos: The Mabel Dodge Luhan Story

By Mark Gordon

This is a biographical documentary about a woman, 100 years ahead of her time. Born into a wealthy Buffalo, NY family during the Victorian Era. We trace the evolution of Mabel Dodge Luhan, a writer, social activist and art patroness who becomes a modern woman and early feminist. In 1917 she moves from Greenwich Village to Taos, New Mexico. She finds love, fulfillment and a spiritual Awakening when she embraces the native Americans at Taos Pueblo and marries Tony Lujan, a full blooded Tiwa Indian. Their marriage becomes a bridge between two cultures and Mabel brings many artists and writers to Taos including Georgia O'Keeffe, D.H. Lawrence, Ansel Adams, Andrew Dasburg, Martha Graham and many others. Mabel Dodge Luhan was part of a consciousness raising shift in our culture that started with Madam Blavatsky, among others, and continues to this day. Mabel had the classic Victorian upbringing. She came to Taos, NM in 1917 escaping New York during WWI. She had an awakening. She felt a connectivity she had never felt before. She ended up marrying a Taos Pueblo indian, Tony Lujan, and together they stayed in Taos the rest of their lives.
