Speak Low
By Stella Brajterman
Speak low is a theatre dance piece created by the artist Stella Brajterman based on the namesake book “Speak low” from the brazilian poet Alice Sant’Anna. The book-length poem was written after the poet’s turn as a visiting fellow at Brown University . In the poem, a young narrator travels to another country and with each new experience forges her personality and her worldview. From this main idea Stella started to research: What images, movements and sonorities are possible when walking? And how do different stimuli produce dramaturgy? How to insert the woman in this dialogue in a ritual sense in their respective urban jungles? How to re-create this city in combination with her memories and fantasies it requires strong legs, sturdy feet, erudition and, above all, imagination, a way of being in touch with the ghosts who linger in chosen spots and inside her story.
